Competing interfacial exchange and Zeeman energies in exchange biased bilayers

چکیده
The exchange bias in antiferromagnet (MnF2)/ferromagnet ~Fe! bilayers has been studied as a function of temperature, cooling field, and interfacial roughness. Positive exchange bias is observed under certain conditions, along with a nonmonotonic roughness dependence. The unusual cooling field dependence can be understood within a simple model in which the exchange bias is determined by a competition between a roughnessdependent average exchange energy and a Zeeman energy for the antiferromagnet surface spins. Our results are consistent with the existence of a domain wall parallel to the interface in the Fe layer, contrary to earlier theoretical models. @S0163-1829~99!08541-0#

Origin of the asymmetric magnetization reversal behavior in exchange-biased systems: competing anisotropies.
The magnetization reversal in exchange-biased ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic (FM-AFM) bilayers is investigated. Different reversal pathways on each branch of the hysteresis loop, i.e., asymmetry, are obtained both experimentally and theoretically when the magnetic field is applied at certain angles from the anisotropy direction. The range of angles and the magnitude of this asymmetry are deter...
متن کاملParallel versus antiparallel interfacial coupling in exchange biased Co/FeF2.
By using the surface and element specificity of soft x-ray magnetic dichroism we provide direct experimental evidence for two different types of interfacial uncompensated Fe moments in exchange biased Co/FeF2 bilayers. Some moments are pinned and coupled antiparallel to the ferromagnet (FM). They give rise to a positive exchange bias and vanish above T(N) = 78 together with the antiferromagnet ...
متن کاملMapping motion of antiferromagnetic interfacial uncompensated magnetic moment in exchange-biased bilayers
In this work, disordered-IrMn3/insulating-Y3Fe5O12 exchange-biased bilayers are studied. The behavior of the net magnetic moment ΔmAFM in the antiferromagnet is directly probed by anomalous and planar Hall effects, and anisotropic magnetoresistance. The ΔmAFM is proved to come from the interfacial uncompensated magnetic moment. We demonstrate that the exchange bias and rotational hysteresis los...
متن کاملCoercivity enhancement in exchange biased systems driven by interfacial magnetic frustration
We report the temperature and cooling field dependence of the coercivity of exchange biased MnF(2)/Fe bilayers. When the antiferromagnetic surface is in a state of maximum magnetic frustration and the net exchange bias is zero, we observe a strong enhancement of the coercivity, which is proportional to the exchange coupling between the layers. Hence, the coercivity can be tuned in a reproducibl...
